Setting up the Act: Jeong-Nyeon
Jeong-Nyeon is a hit webtoon published in NAVER, written by Ireh and illustrated by Namon. It portrays the story of Jeong-Nyeon Yoon who comes up to the capital from Mokpo in 1956, dreaming of making her mark at a women¡¯s national theater company. The exhibition was set up to illuminate the protagonist, Jeong-Nyeon, who confidently proceeds toward her goal, along with the solidarity, growth, and love of the diverse female characters appearing in the webtoon. Furthermore, the visitors may come across the traditional art of women¡¯s national theater, and female creators, throughout thewebsite. We hope our visitors take the exhibition, Setting up the Act: Jeong-Nyeon, as an opportunity to take time retracing what one forgot and what one has to recall—to rush out of the hall and set up a passionate act as Jeong-Nyeon did. The story of Jeong-Nyeon¡¯s gradual growth towards her goal gives joy and hope to the readers. Setting an all-women theater company as its backdrop, JEONG-NYEONG notably unfolds the narratives through the solidarity unfettered by sexist stereotypes. This work underlines the female characters' desires and mutual growths, making many Jeong-Nyeons living the contemporary society recognize themselves in the story.
